Christmas Traditions

8 Nov

Christmas is quickly approaching and with all the holiday festivities starting and ABC Family already advertising for the 25 days of Christmas, Christmas is in the air. It is always fun to bring family and friends together during the Christmas holiday and share traditions that have been passed down through family… and create new traditions that can be passed down too.

Although there are so many fun traditions it is important not to forget who Christmas is about, Jesus. The birth of Jesus and all that he did for his people is what we celebrate. The giving of special gifts, and eating special meals is to honor him. Many traditions focus on honoring him and the Church with special services and Mass and finding ways to serve others in the community.

Family traditions are a different “breed” (if you will) of traditions! There are so many national traditions: the hanging of stockings, picking out a tree with family and then lighting the tree for the first time, opening ONE gift Christmas Eve, and so many more. One of my favorite moments of the Christmas season is decorating.

There are traditions embedded in how families decorate their homes more than we sometimes recognize. Special ornaments that hold incredible meaning, that when you see, you smile; or even picking out a new ornament every year as a family. Traditions are EVERYWHERE and there is nothing more special than reminiscing with family members about how traditions came to be, and why they are so special.

“The night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse…”
